Vanished Gardens - Finding Nature in Philadelphia Lecture and book signing by Sharon White 7pm at Appleford

In her book, Sharon White takes a journey through the landscape of Philadelphia - past and present. She explores the city's gardens as a part of its ecosystem and re-animates the lives of gardeners and naturalists of Philadelphia's past including Bartram's Garden, Lemon Hill, and others.  White gives a surprising portrait of the resilience and richness of the natural world in Philadelphia and the ways that gardening can connect nature to urban space.

Sharon, author of a collection of poetry, Bone House, and a memoir, Field Notes:  A Geography of Mourning, is the recipient of many awards including a Pennsylvania Council on the Arts Fellowship and a National Endowment of the Arts Fellowship.  She lives in Philadelphia and teaches writing at Temple University.

The evening will include a slide show featuring the beautiful gardens, selected readings and discussion with the author.  Copies of her book will be available for purchase and signing.
